Bush and beach

Safari first. Then lie down.

The most commonly botched itinerary shape in Kenya, not because it is hard, but because people plan the two halves separately and discover the joins do not work.

The rule

Safari first is not a preference

A safari is early starts for however many days you give it. Doing that after a week of lying on a beach is fine; doing the lying down afterwards is the whole point. The other way round, you fly home tired.

And if the coast has a bad week you can shorten it. If your safari week goes wrong, you cannot extend it. The camps are full.

  • You arrive fresh for the early mornings, and end rested
  • Weather risk sits on the half you can flex
  • Connections from the Mara to the coast work better than the reverse
  • The beach half costs far less per night, so it absorbs the extra days

Night splits

How to divide the nights

The single most common mistake is splitting a ten-night trip five and five. It sounds balanced and it is not.

Splits that work
Total nightsNairobiSafariCoastNotes
8143Tight but workable. One park only.
10145The sweet spot. One park properly, then a real rest.
1216 (two parks)5Two contrasting parks, still a proper beach week.
1417 (two parks)6Unhurried. A third park only if you like moving.

Five safari nights across two parks gives you three real safari days, because two are travel days. Four nights in one park beats it.

The Bush and Beach Planner

Four worked itineraries with the night splits and connection timings that actually work, plus the three mistakes that turn a combination trip into two rushed halves.

  • Why safari first is not a preference but a rule
  • Four worked itineraries: 8, 10, 12 and 14 nights, with night splits
  • Connection timing, the gaps that catch people out
  • Which beach for which traveller: Diani, Watamu, Lamu, the north coast
  • Which park pairs with which beach, and why Tsavo is the shortcut
  • The coastal weather calendar, which is not the safari calendar
  • A worksheet for splitting your nights

Before you ask

The questions we get most

Can we do the beach first?

You can, and we will book it if you insist, but we will tell you why we would not. You lose the rest at the end, you put the weather risk on the half you cannot flex, and the connections are tighter.

How many nights do we need in total?

Ten is the sweet spot: one in Nairobi, four on safari, five on the coast. Eight works at a push with one park. Below eight, pick one or the other and do it properly.

Is it cheaper to skip Nairobi and fly straight to the Mara?

Marginally, and we would still not do it. Connecting from a long-haul flight straight onto a light aircraft means your first game drive is spent asleep. One Nairobi night is the cheapest insurance on the trip.

Can we take the train instead of flying?

To the coast, yes. The SGR runs Nairobi to Mombasa and passes through Tsavo, which makes a genuinely good three-leg trip: Nairobi, Tsavo by road or rail, then on to Diani. It saves a flight and shows you the country.

What is actually included in a safari price?

A Kenya safari is usually quoted fully inclusive: accommodation, all meals, park and conservancy fees, your guide and vehicle, and transport between parks. Most camps include soft drinks, house wine, beer and laundry.

Not included: international flights, visas or travel authorisation, travel insurance, tips, premium drinks, and extras like balloon flights and spa treatments.

Tell us how many nights you have

We will propose a split, name the camps and the hotels, and price the whole thing (both halves, the flights between them and the transfers) as one itemised quote.

Our Kenya specialist replies within 24 hours.

  • A night split that does not leave you with three real safari days
  • Connection timings that survive a delayed flight
  • Named camps and named beach hotels, not categories
  • One itemised price for the whole trip, not two quotes to reconcile
